Fate vs. Destiny
by Livnam Kaur

There is a recurring theme that has been coming up during my private sessions with people and whenever something keeps coming up I know it is important that we talk about it. I have had several people ask me about fate and destiny. People use these words interchangeably and a lot of confusion arises
Let's take a look at fate and destiny, what makes them different from each other, and which one we should be striving for.

Fate is your karma.

Destiny is your dharma.

Karma is what WE create through our deeds, words, thoughts, actions, etc. It is the realm of cause and effect. We 'cause a cause' and that cause creates an effect.
That effect will reach us whether it takes one minute, one hour, one day, one lifetime or many lifetimes. Karma is Newton's third law--Every action has an equal and opposite reaction--on the moral/mental/energetic levels of being. However, we can change our fate and therefore change the effects of our causes by being spiritually aware and willing in our current lifetime.
We can meditate, we can perform selfless service, and most importantly, anytime we create union with the Divine we are clearing our karma. And we can be aware of our choices. "Am I choosing love?" "Am I choosing from my heart? My spirit?" "Am I following my intuition?"

Dharma is when we are walking the path of our soul's purpose. When we are walking our path we are out of karma. We are no longer creating cause and effect. We are in flow with the universe, with our spirit. Our soul is line with the Divine.

So, what does this mean for you and your everyday life? It means that you can let go of limiting thoughts and beliefs and therefore limiting actions. I hear all too often from someone that they were "fated" to meet a certain person and they thought for sure that the person was going to be their divine right partner. Then the relationship goes sour and they are left confused and hurting. And angry at God for allowing the person to come into their life only to be taken
away. They are determined to get the person back or to at the very least get some confirmation that their hope of reconciliation is not unfounded. It is very difficult to get people to see that fate is not necessarily an indication of long lasting anything. It is simply the balance of karma. And relationships are our biggest challenges and pose the most opportunity for soul growth. They are almost never easy.

If someone is in your fate it means they are in your karma, not necessarily your dharma. If both of you are willing, karma can be cleared and the relationship can be a vehicle for soul growth for the both of you. It can be that the karma is that you work things out as individuals and as a couple in this lifetime and so step into your dharma. But that is not always the case. In fact, how many times were you sure that someone else was "meant to be" before you met your current partner?

Do you see why it is far better to know yourself before you attempt to know anyone else? Do you see why spiritual advisors are always saying that you have to love yourself before you can truly love another? Many people preach this philosophy but they cannot explain what the Cosmic Truth is behind it. But we know now don't we? It is the difference between fate and destiny.

Another example of confusing fate with destiny often happens in the choice of career path. Someone is extremely drawn to a certain profession and is nearly obsessive about it working out yet there are challenges after challenges that stand in the way. They feel fated to be a certain thing in the world and they feel it is their soul's calling because the pull is so strong. This is when one would need to step back and ask, "Am I doing this for the right reason? Do I feel like if I don't succeed in this that it makes me a failure? Can I get still and quiet enough to hear the voice of my soul and figure out if this is fate or destiny?" These are difficult questions to ask.

The pull of karma is very strong. It is far easier to just allow ourselves to be pulled along by the flow of our fate then to stop, check in with ourselves, and began the immense task of communing with the Divine. Yet, when we do that, we realize that Spirit has more in store for us than we could ever imagine! Our life begins to move in new ways, doors open, people arrive, love pours in, we align body, mind, and soul. This is the gift of destiny, of dharma. And, just like with relationships, our career path may be full of karma and dharma. We have to check in with ourselves so we are aligned with our soul’s purpose.

We are alive on this earth during an extraordinary time. It is not easy but it is incredible. We are all here to rise in consciousness. And we have help! Spirit is here to guide us. Take some time to check in with your soul and with your guides and angels. Don't be afraid to examine your fate and find your destiny. You are magnificent and deserving of all good things.
